HJ started 2nd grade today.  He is at a new school, and asked me to walk him to class.  On our way to school, he told me he probably won’t talk to anyone since he doesn’t know anyone.  Then, we got to the school, and he saw a few kids he did know.  He looked at me and said “Bye, mom!”.  So much for needing me to walk in with him!

I pulled all of his “first day” pictures to see how much he has grown over the years.  Excuse me, while I go cry now.

Oh my little one, you are about to start 2nd grade.  Second grade at a new school.  I know how excited you are, you’ve been anxiously waiting for this day to come.  I want this to be the best year yet for you.  I know we always talk about working hard, completing your assignments, and learning your spelling words.

But that isn’t all.  While education will get you far in life, it isn’t what I care most about.  I want you to be kind.  To everyone.  To the kid that is being left out, include him.  To the kid being picked on, stand up for them.  Don’t ever pick on someone you think is different.  Take the time to get to know who they really are.

I know we have talked about things that make a good friend.  I want you to always be a good friend to your classmates.  It doesn’t matter if they think, act or look differently then you.  EVERYONE is important and deserves love.

Becoming a foster family has taught you so much about compassion.  You understand that not everyone comes from loving and supportive homes.  But you know that they still deserve love and support.

If you hear someone say hateful words, let them know it’s not ok. Let an adult know.  Be the good.

I love that you deeply care about others.  Don’t ever change that.  Offer help and friendship, especially to those who need it most.

I can not wait to see what this year brings you.  I wish you lots of fun, learning, and friendship.  And don’t forget to be kind to everyone.

School ended the same week we moved.  Meaning, I officially have a 2nd grader! The end of the school year was bitter sweet.  It was the last day at HJ’s elementary school, as we moved districts.  HJ has loved Southdale, but I am excited that he will be in a smaller school.  HJ has been extremely sad to leave his current buddies, but likes that in a few short years (gasp!) they will all be in junior high together.

Our end of the year picture was the first picture taken at the new house!  It’s amazing to see just how much he has changed since August.  And doesn’t he seem so much more excited for the last day?

Friday was HJ’s birthday.  One he has been counting down for months.  So, we had to make sure he had the best day ever.

He woke up to a room full of balloons, and got ready for school.  We swung by dunkin donuts for a chocolate sprinkle donut..best breakfast for birthday kids :).  He walked to school with a container of cupcakes to share with his class, and it was only a half day of school.  At noon, I picked up HJ and his friend.  We went for Happy Meals, and played outside in the perfect weather.  Then, we had to pick up the cake for HJ’s party.  The bakery is ran out of a home, which is on a farm.  The farm has lot, and lots of cats.  So we stayed to play a while.  img_6956

Then, it was time to head off on our next adventure…Chuck E. Cheese.  The boys burned through their tokens in less than 30 minutes.  HJ opted to save his tickets, and did not take home a prize.

We came home to get ready for HJ’s family party.  His nana, papa and great grandma were coming over for dinner and cake.  He picked out dinner, edamame and taco pizza.  Then, opened up his presents.  After presents, came cake.

Safe to say, he was ready for bed shortly after.  We had a great day celebrating my favorite boy in the world!  Happy Birthday, sweet boy!

With all of the craziness that the first weeks of school brings, HJ and I have been finally getting into a routine.

And…I officially have a 1st grader.

I can’t believe it.

He is loving 1st grade, even though it isn’t quite as fun as kindergarten.  He has started flag football, he likes everything about it except for the stretching (who has time for that?!?).  He still wants to be a vet and an animal trainer, going on 3 years now!  We fought about getting a haircut, and finally last weekend he agreed to getting his bangs cut so he could see.  I only had to bribe him with 6 Pokemon cards, a stop at his favorite ice cream shop and letting him stay the night in my bed.  Totally worth it.

He loves to watch EvanTube, play minecraft and run around outside with the neighbor kids.  Yesterday, I told him I signed him up for Lego club tomorrow morning and you would have thought I told him we were going to Disney World.

He already decided what he wants for his birthday in November…2 guinea pigs.  And I already told him he should think of something less stinky, and less work.  He is pretty adamant about what Santa should bring this year.  Good luck on finding a jet pack, Santa.

Every day I am amazed at how caring, silly and sweet he is.  But I also love his feisty streak.  I can’t believe I have a 1st grader, time goes by so fast when you’re having fun!

Today’s post is not quite ready.  That leads to you getting ramblings today instead of Friday…let’s begin.

I have officially harvested 2 cucumbers from my garden.  Interestingly enough, I didn’t even know we were growing cucumbers.  HJ brought home a few random plants from school that we threw in the garden, so I am assuming that is where it came from!

Last night, HJ saw a tiny dog walking down the street.  He looks at me and says, “That dog is darn cute!”.  Which is way cuter than him singing this.

We have school registration this week.  I don’t feel like summer should be coming to a close, but school starts in a few short weeks!

Speaking of school, Groopdealz has some awesome Back to School items right now, you should check it out!  Like these cute pencil bags for only $5…

I have made some really good meals lately, but forget to take pictures, which leads to no recipe posts.  Clearly, I will never be a food blogger.

This past weekend, I went to a party.  An all day party.  I don’t drink often, but apparently that day I figured “what the hell”.  And it was.  The end.

Due to a string of picture texts I sent my friend (while at the party), I have been contemplating snapchat.  Ugh.  Can’t believe I admitted that.  But, I just might…because the picture texts made me giggle.

I also learned that my water proof phone case is in fact water proof.  Lake Ponderosa: 0 Life Proof Case: 1.

And in case my weekend wasn’t busy enough, I ran my 3rd 5k.  WOOHOO.  I do think this was the easiest one yet.  And on that note, I also set a PR!  31 minutes 41 seconds.  If anyone in the Cedar Valley knows of a good 5K in August, pass it on!

This week at school, HJ is learning all about clothes (I don’t exactly know what that means).  We were told to let them pick out their favorite outfits.  Tuesday rolls around (HJ’s first day of school for the week) and I tell him to wear his favorite outfit.  He came out wearing not one, not two, but three angry bird shirts.  At once.  He looked like a little butterball.  An adorable, angry bird, butterball.  Then he proceeded to show me his Ninja Turtle underwear.  We had a quick lesson on not showing the underwear off at school.

A few weeks ago, I heard about a single mom who was attacked fairly close to where I live.  She has a 4-year-old boy who witnessed the whole thing.  It hit a little close to home.  On top of that, it was random.  Apparently some guy was knocking on her door saying he needed help because there had been an accident.  When she opened the door, he tried to rape her and told her he was going to kill her.  She was able to get away and get help, but holy crap.  Frightening.  Check out the article.  Needless to say, unless I know who is on the other side of the door, I probably wont be answering it.  Thank goodness for a peephole.  But still, if someone says they need help, I don’t want to be bitter and not offer assistance.  This is why bad people really suck.  It makes it so I don’t know if I should help or not. What would you do if someone was on the other side of the door asking for help because of an accident?

This past week, I managed to stay under my calorie count.  On top of that, I started the c25k app (couch to 5 k).  I have never been a runner, but I am trying. One thing I have learned is that running sucks. That, and I am barely eating processed foods anymore.  And, I feel like I have more energy.  Now if only the 17 pounds would just slide right off…

This week seemed forever long, so I am super glad it’s almost the weekend.  Saturday, HJ starts swim lessons, and Saturday night I get to go to a b-day party while HJ has a sleep over at nana and papa’s.  Love the weekends 🙂

Hope you all have a great one!
