When I was young, my Grandma would always celebrate my half birthday by giving me half a cake.  I thought it was cute, and wanted to start carrying the tradition on with HJ.  Of course, we didn’t just have cake…we had a weekend celebration!  Okay, not really, but anything fun we did it was because it was his “half birthday”.

We started by going to see The Crood’s.  We had free movie passes burning a hole in our pockets (they expired soon), and on Saturday, it was supposed to rain.  We spent the afternoon in the movie theater…HJ spent half the movie asleep in my lap.

On Sunday, we made a cake.  Well, half a cake.  I made the cake in a round cake pan, cut it in half and layered it.  The finished product wasn’t as cute as I had envisioned, but that should be expected of me by now.

We topped it with 3 1/2 candles and stared at it all day until after dinner.

We measured HJ to see how much he has grown in the past 6 months (about 2 inches!)

And finally had family over for pizza and cake!

HJ told everyone from the movie theater workers to the grocery store check-out employees that is was his half birthday.  And yes, I did get some confused looks.  I can’t believe EVERYONE doesn’t celebrate like we do.

  1. You are such a fun mom! 🙂 I love stealing all of your ideas!!!!!!!!

  2. I loved celebrating my half birthday as a kid. Granted, nobody else celebrated with me, but it was important. I still notice when it happens. Unfortunately, there’s no February 30th, so Quinn misses out!

You should just celebrate hers the day before or after! Everyone needs a good excuse for cake 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for a few months, I’m also a single mom to a 3 year old little boy. I just had to say that I loved your idea to celebrate your son’s half bday, I may have to “borrow” your half cake idea! My son’s birthday is Christmas Eve and although I always make a big deal out of his birthday, I still feel like sometimes he misses out with a bday near Christmas.
PS- my son has the same robot shirt, Target (also known as my favorite store!), right?

Your son totally deserves a half birthday party! Even with HJ’s birthday being in Nov., it is hard to think of stuff he wants for BOTH when they are that close.
Yes, Target! He thinks the robot shirt is pretty cool 🙂

  4. Aw, I love this! Half birthdays should definitely be celebrated.
